It is a type of Tamil Hindu poem in the form of a song in poetic meter. This type of song is called niraval or manavi sangeytai, “poem with melody” meaning that meaning it has music to it and so meaning sung by instruments. The poem is composed of eight parts. The first five parts are sung by the raga known as kambhoji which has music notes to it. Then the last two parts are sung by the raga known as jahnavi which has no musical notes to it.This song is set in praise of Lord Shiva who is called Amman meaning “Lord” or “Sublime” and hence "Ammayum Makanum" meaning “Glorious Lord who fulfills all the desires” It sings about his many incarnations and how his power extends even to women and children. It ends with a prayer, asking Lord Shiva to keep all his devotees safe and happy. It says that this prayer was recited by the court poet Madurai Narayanan Chettiyar to the Tamil Chola Kings Raja Raja Chola and his son Rajendra Chola. It was composed in musical note raga Kambhoji which has picturesque notes to it. The song is therefore also known as “Khamboji Panthal” or “Kambhoji Song” or “Kammavarcha Khamboji Pannal” meaning a poem sung in raga kambhoji. The last two lines of the song are sung in raga Jahnavi which has no musical notes to it. This is known as “Thaammaam Kalavathu Koodal” meaning “Song in poetic meter sung in raga Jahnavi”. The poem is believed to have been composed by the poet Madurai Narayanan Chettiyar during the Chola period of Tamil history around 930 AD. The dancer/musician-poet Madurai N.C. Chidambaranar was also a devotee of Lord Shiva and is believed to have composed this song in the same period. The Pannalanikathakal or "The Seven Ancient Poetic Verses" is a collection of seven Tamil Poems from different poetic meters written in the Dravidian language by various Tamil poets from various different periods. These poems are found in different locations in temples or Buddhist monasteries across South India. These Pannalanikathakal were discovered by a team of scholars headed by Papanasam Sivan in 1944.
